This is my custom built heat exchanger for my fire place. I used 1x3 inch 1/8 thick tubing that I welded with a hobart 140. Currently using a 120 cfm fan but will be upgraded to something stronger ... All that was left, was to cut the existing horizontal flue with my angle grinder, install the newly built heat exchanger and put some high heat paint on it. Now, the flue gases are already down to 150 degrees (celsius) and with an additional fan I should be able to get it down to around 100 degress which means I just cut the waste by 50%. When I designed my home with radiant heat, I was told by the manufacturer that I only needed two zones – one for each story of the house. BAD idea! The first story had a greenhouse off the west side and a north facing ell. The heat was never on during the day in the ell because of the passive solar in the front of the house.

Design and Construction of a Spiral Heat Exchanger

In this article, the performance and applications of a Spiral Plate Heat Exchanger are demonstrated. Also, governing equation of heat transfer phenomena in such heat exchangers is discussed. Regarding the governing equations, a LAB-sized model of this type of heat exchanger was designed and constructed. Galvanized Iron sheets were used as the heat transfer surfaces. I have built a simple heat pump using a couple old airconditioners. Covered my basement floor with a couple hundred feet of garden hose covered in insulation. I have a small circulating pump. Removed one exchanger from the malfunctioning air conditioner.

How do heat exchangers work? - Explain that Stuff

If you're still confused about what a heat exchanger is, you might find it helpful to think about two examples of everyday, heat-moving devices that transport heat but aren't really heat exchangers. A kitchen or bathroom extractor fan (left) is designed to suck hot, moist air from your home and dump it outside. Houses are being built like zip lock bags. Air tight can be a worse problem than some air getting through. This is well engineered and solid product. Easy to install and operate. Considering other options this is great air exchanger.

How to Build — DIY Air to Air Cross-Flow Heat Exchanger ...

Completed heat exchanger located near ceiling in office workshop. Actual exchanger is covered with shiny bubble wrap insulation, white pipe stem protruding to left is the intake for indoor air, it is elongated to prevent short circuiting in/out vents. 6. What are the options if a Heat Exchanger is bad? There are only two options if a Heat Exchanger is bad: Replace the heat exchanger or replace the furnace. If the heat exchanger is under warranty, this option is a good way to go unless it is unavailable in the time frame needed, which can be immediate in cold weather. The heat exchanger is where the gas burners are located. The heat exchanger is designed to be heated by the burner flames while the furnace blower moves room air across the outside of it. Under normal conditions, when the furnace is running, the air coming into blower from the house (return air) is generally 60 to 68 degrees F.

What is a Heat Exchanger? How do Heat Exchangers Work?

    2. How to increase the lifetime of a Heat Exchanger. Heat exchangers are manufactured from robust materials, have no moving parts and operate at a variety of different pressures and temperatures, therefore if a heat exchanger is used in the correct way then there is no reason why it shouldn't be able to remain operational for many years. The cracked heat exchanger. Because the metal of the heat exchanger expands and then contracts as it heats and cools, the stress may eventually cause a crack to form on the exchanger. Corrosion because of reaction between the combustion gas and the metal (often because of improper venting) can also weaken the metal to the point where cracks ...

Heat Exchanger That Creates Fresh Air | Make:

In the winter, warm air going out through the heat exchanger gives up its heat to cold air coming in, and during the summer, cool air blown out through the heat exchanger steals heat from hot air coming in, so that by the time the incoming air enters the house, it isn’t hot anymore. Heat Exchangers are available in many types of construction, each with its advantages and limitations. The main heat exchanger types are: Shell & Tube – The most common heat exchanger design type consists of a parallel arrangement of tubes in a shell [Figure 1]. One fluid flows through the tubes and the other fluid flows through the shell over the tubes.

How Do I Build a Fireplace Heat Exchanger? | eHow

The heat exchanger is nothing more than a pipe with a small opening at one end and a larger opening at the bottom. What's needed are several 5-foot lengths of galvanized threaded steel pipe, a pipe bender rented from a tool rental supply house (a curved grip attached to a long handle), five end caps for one end of each pipe, two 22-inch lengths of steel bar (1-inch diameter will do), 10 3-inch ... A shell and tube heat exchanger is designed with a number of tubes placed inside a cylindrical shell. The popular design of this type of heat exchanger allows for a wide range of pressures and temperatures. If you need to cool or heat a large amount of fluids or gases, the application of the shell and tube heat exchanger is an option to consider.
